about

According to the book " The Lyric gems of Scotland - A Collection of Scottish Songs " Helen had two rivals competing for her affections . Adam Fleming was the intended victim of murder by his rival as he and Helen walked by the banks of the Kirtle - the tragedy unfolded and this song tells the story.

lyrics

I wish I were where Helen lies!
Night and day on me she cries;
O that I were where Helen lies,
On fair Kirconnell Lea!

Curst be the heart, that thought the thought,
curst be the hand, that fired the shot,
When in my arms fair Helen dropt,
And died to for sake of me!

O think na but my heart was sair,
When my love fell and spake nae mair!
I laid her down with gentle care
On fair Kirconnell Lea.

I lighted down, my sword did draw,
Stern was our strife in Kirtleshaw
I hew’d him down in pieces small ,
For her that died for me.

O Helen fair! O Helen chaste!
were I with thee I would be blest,
Where thou liest low, and take’st thy rest,
On fair Kirconnell Lea.

I wish I were where Helen lies!
Night and day on me she cries;
I’m sick of all beneath the skies ,
Since my love died for me.
